Select “ Import All New Videos.” You probably want to have “ Delete items after import” selected, which will help free up storage on the device. When you plug in your device to your computer, the screen to the right will appear.Err on the side of capturing too much footage. As you will see iMovie makes it very easy to edit out sound a record a voice over for videos. Don’t try worry about sound or narrating what you are doing while you film.I have done some videos where I set up the camera and record myself, but inevitably something is just out of frame and I have to reshoot. Have your device in a horizontal orientation.Use some sort of stand (i.e., a stack of books) so your footage isn’t shaky. Before you get started make sure you have plenty of free space on the device because the video files will be large. This can be done using an iPad (on loan from TLT if you don’t have one) or other device.Below are some tips and best practices I’ve discovered in making instructional videos for a lab course I teach, “Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry.” I was surprised how easy it was to use iMovie after attending an iMovie session at TLT’s Faculty Technology Institute and I highly recommend taking an hour to sit in on a training session. I know…it sounds great, but you don’t know anything about filming and editing videos and you don’t have time to learn. Once produced, videos can be used again and again for semesters to come!.You can free up time in the classroom or lab for other instruction. If there are hazards associated with the technique (or being in lab in general), safety can be represented in a way that is consistent with your department’s standards. If different instructors teach multiple sections of a course or lab, you can ensure students are a getting consistent message across all sections.Videos can easily be replayed if students don’t quite catch everything that is presented the first time around.Students can get a quick review if they haven’t performed the task in some time.

If you’ve experienced this in your teaching you may want to consider producing instructional videos using iMovie. And a couple weeks later when called upon to use the same technique? Many students could probably use a refresher.

These instructions are based off iMovie version 10.1.2 on a MacBook Pro Laptop.ĭo you teach a course or lab that requires students to carry out a task using a specific hands-on technique? You may have experienced of a large group of students huddled around you as you demonstrate some critical technique only to look up and discover half the class is straining to get a peak at what you’re doing. Kate Mullaugh, Assistant Professor in Chemistry. It was probably an automatic process that sent you the message anyway. Our guest blogger is Dr. I think if you would have gone through the appeals process and told them that the music is stock from iMovie, provided by Apple royalty-free, they would have relented. I hear reports that sometimes people publish the Apple music as-is and claim it is their own, and then see if they can con others by scaring them that they are violating the license. Other times it finds the original music, which Apple has purchased, in some old collection and isn’t aware that it is from Apple and properly licensed. Sometimes YouTube’s automatic algorithm picks up the music and just assumes it must be a copyright violation. But I have run into it with YouTube many times. I’ve never run into your issue with Facebook, which is new to the video distribution thing. Section 2C seems to cover it quite convincingly saying that you can use the music royalty-free. It is completely legal to use the audio Apple provides as part of iMovie, GarageBand, Photos and in other software. I am hoping that the automated FB elves just assumed a musical soundtrack could be an issue, and that they are looking to protect FB by having me declare that i have rights to use it. I would have thought that sound effects available in iMovie are ok to use publicly, but thought I would ask if Gary or others have any definitive views on this.

There did seem to be an appeals process, but rather than follow this I simply removed the soundtrack from the video and reposted as silent movie – the FB elves were happy with this. However, when I posted this on Facebook, the FB elves removed the video, citing content that did not necessarily belong to me as the reason for removal.

On my last video I added a sound track using the in-built Audio Sound Effects available in iMovie (I actually used the Acoustic Sunrise Jingle available in iMovie for Mac version 10.1.2). I have been enjoying myself creating Movie projects in iMovie and then posting them on Facebook. Is There a Copyright Issue With iMovie Sound Effects?
